Middleburg Architect of Neumann Lewis Buchanan Architects

APRIL 28, 1956 - APRIL 14, 2025

Mark Steven Buchanan

Mark Steven Buchanan, 68, passed away peacefully at his home on April 14, 2025, after

a short battle with a vicious glioblastoma. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to Ronald and Carol Sue Buchanan on April 28, 1956. Mark grew up in Toledo and attended the University of Cincinnati studying engineering. However, Mark was always fascinated with architecture. After working with a local architect, Mark decided to move to a warmer climate and pursue his dream. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture and met his wife, Lisa. His passion for architecture led him eventually to a partnership at Neumann Lewis Buchanan Architects, DC and Middleburg, VA where he designed notable and award-winning country homes for his clients.

Mark’s distinctive eye for beauty was combined with masterful architectural skill and a

potent work ethic. Mark was also passionate about traveling to Europe with his wife of 39 years, Lisa, who is also an architect. While researching their adventures, Mark would immerse himself into the culture, ancestral ties, and of course, architecture of the places they would explore together. In all things that Mark did, he pursued excellence and elegance.

He was preceded in death by his father Ronald Buchanan; mother, Carol Sue Buchanan;

older brother David Buchanan; and younger brother Paul Buchanan. He is survived by wife

Lisa, and his two children, Douglas Buchanan, Nealon Buchanan

A memorial service will take place in late May with details to follow. Memorial donations may be made to the National Audubon Society.
